It turns out the opener worked after I requested the service call. I was very impressed with my technician, Cody. He was polite, he checked everything several times just to make sure nothing was wrong with the opener. Sorry I had to shell out the $$ but that's life.

Just wanted to thank your customer service rep for her patience in listening to my situation. The service call was granted under warranty work without a service call. Thank you. Also, the tech Rick Jones only had to listen to the door opening and knew exactly the cause of the problem and immediately replaced the incorrect part.
